Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews To Play Himself On David Simon's New HBO Series 'Tremé'

New Album 'Backatown,' Out April 20 On Verve Forecast

The Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans' 6th Ward, part of an area known locally as "Backatown," is the birthplace of Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. It is also the historic birthplace of jazz, and the name of the highly anticipated new HBO series about post-Katrina New Orleans produced by David Simon, creator of "The Wire."

Trombone Shorty will appear in the new HBO series as himself - a young musical dynamo who is being hailed by critics and fellow musicians alike as one of the most important musicians to come out of New Orleans in a generation.

In HBO's fictional Tremé (pronounced "Tre-MAY"), Trombone Shorty will be one of more than a dozen celebrated musicians from, or influenced by, New Orleans, who have been cast in roles both large and small, including Dr. John, trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, Allen Toussaint, and Elvis Costello.

No stranger to the screen, Trombone Shorty recently appeared on Good Morning America and ESPN and is featured in April on the new PBS series, Music Voyager, as they explore the music scene in New Orleans. This is in addition to prior exposure on MTVu, a televised performance on the 2008 NBA All Star game, the celebrated re-opening of the Super Bowl onstage along with U2 and Green Day, various segments on CNN and a moving performance leading "The City of New Orleans" on trumpet on Studio 60.

Though he comes from the neighborhood that gave birth to jazz and has earned accolades from the city's jazz legends for his ability in that realm, Andrews is currently focusing on his own hybrid of rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop and soul, a style he calls "Supafunkrock." Building from the more traditional New Orleans funk and soul he absorbed since his childhood on the streets of Tremé, Andrews has added modern influences and his own creativity as musician, bandleader and showman to deliver night after night of legendary high-energy funk/rock shows that have mesmerized rock and jazz stars and audiences alike.

'Backatown,' produced by Ben Ellman of Galactic, features guest appearances by Allen Toussaint, Lenny Kravitz, Mark Broussard.
