After seven tracks of propulsive, dark pop electro-rock, Marrow decided to end their new album 'Sunshine Enema,' out March 2, with a stark, hazy cover of "Heart Like A Wheel," the Anna McGarrigle song made famous by Linda Ronstadt. Erin Fortes' anguished vocals and sparse piano are surrounded by a gauzy electronic haze on the track, creating a haunting interpretation of the song.
"There are many versions of this song out there. A dear friend sent me the YouTube video of Mary Black's take and after one listen, I was haunted by it. I knew that I needed to sing it, but with a completely different approach," says Erin.
Jeremy Fortes, co-songwriter continues, "It's a folk song in nature - we recontextualized it by stripping it down, slowing it down and lowering the key. We felt that it could be more powerful, and even more heartbreaking, if we removed the traditional chord structure and created a conceptual meditation on love and sadness."
They then handed over a rough version of the track to producer David Earl with the instructions to make the song sound like it was in the middle of still, dark waters. The result can be heard here:
http://blissisignorance.com/audio.html 'Sunshine Enema' is an eight song collection that features ferociously programmed beats coated with a dark pop sheen, with each track burrowing itself into the listener's brain. As vocalist and songwriter Erin Fortes says, "we want to prove that misery can also make you move your gloomy ass."
