Papas Got a Brand New Bag

Warren Haynes graces the cover of the December issue of Relix, an in-depth profile on the guitar god who has been performing and touring non-stop since he was 16 with some of the world’s greatest bands. This year he released his lauded, mighty soul record ‘Man In Motion,’ debuted his new band with a 5-month world tour and became a proud papa, welcoming a son to his happy family (congrats, Warren!).

Big Rock Jammy Mountain

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect on Friday as I headed up to the Catskills and Hunter, NY to take in my 2nd annual Mountain Jam. The weekend fest is curated by Warren Haynes and WDST, and takes place at the foot of Hunter Mountain the first weekend in June, now in its 7th year.

The Warren Haynes Band headlined Friday night with two epic sets…Warren and his new band are in top form and kept thousands of fans grooving to their mighty soul on the mountain side with cuts from the new ‘Man In Motion’ and more. Listen to Warren talk about his Stax LP on NPR’s Weekend Edition here. Next stop for WHB: Bonnaroo on Friday (June 10). Gov’t Mule headlined Saturday and My Morning Jacket closed out the fest on Sunday, with performances from Mavis Staples, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Soulive and many more throughout the weekend. I snapped some photos from Friday’s festivities:

Warren Haynes’ Staxtastic Beacon Show

Heavy duty musicians and critics turned out for Warren Haynes‘ show at the Beacon Theater last week celebrating the release of his soul deep new solo album on Stax Records, ‘Man In Motion.’

While I got in some good hang time with Rolling Stone’s David Fricke and the WSJ’s Jim Fusilli (watch Jim’s recent interview with Warren here) Warren turned out a monster 3+ hour set, with some truly special guests. At the end of the first set, Stax O.G. William Bell – who, in 1961, was the first male artist to record for the label – hopped onstage to sing killer versions of “Don’t Miss Your Water” and “Born Under a Bad Sign” (both of which he wrote!). Warren commented that William must’ve recorded for Stax when he was one year old, and from the looks of him, I’d agree. Here’s a shot of us hanging backstage. Those who stuck around for Warren’s encore (which is to say virtually everyone) were treated to a monster guitar summit between Warren and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. Here’s a post-show shot of (L-R) messrs Whitford and Haynes, yours truly, Shore Fire’s Chris Taillie, and Warren Haynes Band keyboard player extraordinaire Nigel Hall.

Not only is The Iridium is jumping this week but Warren Haynes is in town showing off his latest album which features the legendary guitarist as a rockstar vocalist. According to the Boston Globe’s take on his album ‘Man In Motion’ -  “The singing, writing, and arrangements are as vital as Haynes’s typically exemplary guitar playing.”

A New Year’s Party From Gov’t Mule W/ a Whole New Set List

I had the pleasure of attending the extended Gov’t Mule show on Friday night at the Beacon. They played 24 songs over the course of 3 sets, first hitting the stage at 9:30pm and not calling it quits until 2:30am. It was their 9th time playing the Beacon on New Years Eve and the theme was “Get Behind The Mule: The Ultimate Gov’t Mule Concert.” Fans picked the songs, both Mule originals and covers and it resulted in an incredible show. Check out the full set list. Highlights for me were their own “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Mule”; The Beatles’ “Yer Blues”; “Shakedown Street” and “Sugaree,” a pair of Grateful Dead songs; and “Afro Blue,” made famous by John Coltrane, with guests Bill Evans and Oz Noy. And Warren Haynes presided over the countdown to midnight, which saw balloons released from the ceiling of the Beacon. Here’s the stage, minutes after the countdown, littered with balloons, as shot from the balcony:

On Thursday, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos showed up to jam. Incredibly, they played 21 songs on Thursday and the set list did not repeat over the course of the two nights.

Warren Haynes, Allman Bros. Take Manhattan

I went way, way uptown last Thursday, in the shadow of the GW Bridge, to United Palace to see an epic set by the Allman Brothers with Shore Fire friends Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. Wow! For the first set, I sat side stage with a drummers’ eye view of Jaimoe’s amazing drumming and sat more or less upstage from Gregg’s keyboard world. The three percussionists really drive each song and let the guitarists ride about the groove. Gregg can really sing, too. The first set was loaded with blues, from the Taj Mahal-arrangement of the Blind Willie McTell song “Statesboro Blues” to a gospel-influenced take on Robert Johnson’s “Come On In My Kitchen.”

For the second set, I was in the audience and had a chance to witness the incredible interplay between Haynes and Trucks. These guys are two of the best guitarists alive and it’s amazing that all these musicians can lock in so tight. The encore rendition of “Whipping Post” was something to witness.

Here they are on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon doing “Black Hearted Woman.” How did they all fit on on that small Late Night stage?!

I also took Warren to visit the kind folks at Rolling Stone, who taped two incredible solo acoustic performances, “Old Friend” (which he wrote for the Allman Bros.) and “Railroad Boy,” a highlight from the latest Gov’t Mule album. After seeing both Mule and the Allmans in a larger space, it was incredible to see him sing with the same intensity in a small room. I can attest to the fact that Haynes is also a really nice guy and I hope I get to spend more time with him.
