Auster Extravaganza for Issue Project Room

Sophie Auster, Marilyn Laverty, Paul Auster, and Karen Auster at Issue Project Room fundraising reception

Mary Pat Thornton and Cormac McEnery hosted a wonderful evening of music and literature at their Pierrepont Street home in support of the Issue Project Room, an exquisite performance center at 110 Livingston Street (Brooklyn) that is becoming a hub for creative culture for all of New York. In keeping with Issue Project’s philosophy of presenting groundbreaking work in all the arts for audiences of all ages, the evening featured a reading of unpublished letters by literary icon Paul Auster as well as a musical set by his gorgeous and charming daughter Sophie.

I’m really grateful to my colleague Karen Auster, the dynamic founder of the Auster Agency, for introducing me to the Issue Project Room, which is not only a breathtaking jewel of a space but also a nurturing community that fosters artistic collaboration and experimentation. What a treat it was to meet Paul Auster and receive a signed copy of his novel Sunset Park, which I read on Christmas vacation and found to be irresistible, moving, and quite devastating. Hearing Paul’s daughter Sophie perform was a revelation — she’s got a rich and expressive voice and I look forward to hearing her new EP, “Red Weather”, when it’s released this year. If you want to follow Sophie, you can find her @SophieHAuster.

Rave On Warby Parker

I spent part of my summer working on the fantastic Rave On Buddy Holly record – and am also a proud wearer of Warby Parker glasses (as are a couple other Shore Fire staff members), so in a confluence of events went to the Warby Parker/Rave On Buddy Holly Fashion Night Out Party last night at Partners and Spade in NOHO.

Rave On Buddy Holly and Warby Parker, a super cool and affordable NYC-based eyeglasses company, teamed up to celebrate what would have been Buddy’s 75th BDAY with cake, booze, and a performance by Rave On contributor Justin Townes Earle. Rave On producers Randall Poster and Gelya Robb were in attendance and JTE put on a great set. Buddy deserves his own national holiday, but this party was a good NYC way to celebrate.

The Unfortunate Umbrella Situation

Every time we’re doused with some really good rain, I find myself questioning New Yorkers’ usage of the umbrella. And this week is no different.

Now, as we approach 48 hours of straight rain, the streets, sidewalks, subways, and parks are becoming increasingly littered by broken, castaway umbrellas. And not just broken, but horribly mangled in most cases.

Sure, some of those umbrellas probably cost $2 on the corner (or maybe $5 at the convenience store) and aren’t built to withstand wind gusts of more than 2 mph, but still – why is it that people just leave their broken umbrellas right where they are when the tragedy occurs?

We don’t do this with anything else when it breaks: backpacks, cars, headphones, ballpoint pens, folding chairs… I could go on.

Maybe in that moment – when you’re suddenly getting drenched because this infernal contraption is no longer equipped to keep you dry – throwing it down on the ground in anger is just the most satisfying. (It’s still littering.)

Whatever the reason, here’s a collection of some of the best Umbrellas in Distress I’ve come across.

NYC In The Late 80s

Gothamist has a wonderful slideshow waxing nostalgic on NYC stars in the late-80’s. Remember when Sean Penn was married to Madonna? Or when Woody Allen was Mr. Family Guy? It’s all documented there in it’s grainy, shoulder-pad filled glory.

Here’s a fun one of a Bruce, George Harrison and Mick Jagger collaboration.

BONUS - here’s what yours truly looked like in the late 80’s:
