Last Friday we finished the week with a grand celebration of my pool partner Lauretta Charlton’s birthday. What made it so grand? Well besides the fact that Lauretta is awesome, which makes her birthday awesome by association, the cupcakes from her choice of The Chocolate Room were practically intoxicating from sweetness, leaving a sugar high to last for hours. Well, maybe not hours but they sure picked up the end of my day! I do believe it was another crowd pleaser. Good choice, Lauretta! Hope you enjoyed one before your karaoke birthday celebration! And I hope you had an excellent birthday!
Happy Birthday, Rebecca!
Yesterday we celebrated our fabulous VP, Rebecca Shapiro’s, birthday. Though it was quite a cold day, Rebecca went with a tasty Haagen-Dazs ice cream cake, with a cookies and cream/chocolatey peanut butter mix. Seemed to be quite a crowd-pleaser! Personally, I was thrilled that the ice cream cake wasn’t hard as a rock when we were ready to devour! The art of timing ice cream cake preparation is not an easy one, ask Madelyn! Hope you enjoyed your birthday, Rebecca! And as always, I hope you enjoyed the cake!
Happy (early!) Birthday, Matt and Anthony!
Yesterday the Shore Fire gang came together to celebrate the birthdays of Matt Hanks and Anthony D’Amato before the holiday vacations kick off. There was a burst of flavors in the Suite 16 kitchen with a wide variety of cupcakes from Butter Lane. The seasonal menu brought us fall flavors including honey cinnamon and pumpkin, as well as year around favorites like espresso and french chocolate (aka Diva Chocolate, gaining its nickname from its highly time sensitive, quick melting chocolate icing). I was advised at the bakery that these “Diva Chocolate” cupcakes “don’t travel well” but they definitely hit the spot and won over the hearts of the SFM crew. One might say they were… Divalicious.
Although I missed the action shot of Matt and Andy blowing out the candles, here’s a nice “reaction shot” after their Happy Birthday song as the guys got ready to dig into those cupcakes. Happy early birthday, guys! Enjoy your vacations too!!!
Happy Birthday, Chris B!
Yesterday we celebrated Chris Brudzinski’s birthday in a slightly different fashion. Rather than the traditional birthday cake party, we had a breakfast party with bagels and coffee from La Bagel Delight. The assortment of bagels was incredible, with everything from egg bagels to onion to pumpernickel. Chris, I hope you enjoyed your time off, but I really hope the soccer theme and bagel breakfast made coming back to work a little more enjoyable!
Happy Birthday, Tyler!
This week, we celebrated the birthday of the oh so delightful Tyler Cannon. The Shore Fire gang gathered to enjoy a unique carrot cake, described as carrot cake with cheesecake on top, from Lady Bird Bakery. Tyler was fortunate enough to have a 3-day weekend for Labor Day and his birthday, but I hope the cake made coming back to work after the long weekend a little bit easier!
Happy Birthday, Elizabeth!
Last week, we celebrated the lovely Elizabeth Lutz’s birthday. It was my first birthday preparation (and now first blog post), but from the reaction to the cake, I think it was a success. I had to search high and low for the most special Black Forest cake in NYC. Who knew that it would be so hard to get your hands on one these days? CeciCela Patisserie, in SoHo, came through at the last minute with their delicious take on Black Forest, alternating layers of chocolate génoise and brandied cherries in vanilla cream. Hopefully Elizabeth enjoys her meal from Peter Luger as well!
Happy Birthday, Elizabeth!
A Double Cheesecake Birthday
Yesterday we celebrated a double birthday in honor of the lovely Carrie Tolles and the delightful Mark Satlof! For cakes, they went for a pair of cheesecakes (plain and strawberry-topped) from the legendary Junior’s of Brooklyn.
Happy birthday, you two!
The big birthday is July 3rd, NOT July 4th
Around here at Shore Fire, the big anniversary isn’t Independence Day, July 4th. No, early July for us means it’s time to celebrate Shore Fire founder President Marilyn Laverty’s July 3rd birthday. Marilyn’s seen in this video, with the Shore Fire staff gathered in our conference room for an ice cream sundae smorgasbord. The wishes are heart felt if the voices are a little out of key. Happy Birthday Marilyn!
The All-Singing Meryl Streep Birthday Tribute
Happy 62nd Birthday Meryl Streep!

I know she is an obvious choice for a favorite actress, but she is also the correct choice for a favorite actress. “Graciously Amazing” is how I would describe her. She is so talented of an actress, that it kind of is a footnote of how great a singer she is. Very soft, lulling, and lovely voice that can grow powerful unexpectedly. So in honor of Meryl Streep’s birthday, here’s your guide to Meryl Streep singing in the movies:
-”Mama Mia”: She actually reached the Portuguese pop charts at #8 and received a Grammy nomination for her work in the Abba-musical
-”Postcards from The Edge”: She also gets points in this movie for covering Ray Charles “You Don’t Know Me” while rocking a denim jacket
-”A Praire Home Companion” – Starting around the 2:20 mark of this video– watch out.
-”Silkwood” - Just a link here because her singing happens at the very end of the movie, so SPOILER! (This is one of her Oscar nominated movies, so best just to go watch the whole thing).
Upon writing this post, I learned she is a classically trained vocalist (makes sense), she had extensive stage work, which included musicals, before her film career (makes even more sense), and that there is a song in ‘Fame’ titled “Think of Meryl Streep”. And since I’m talking about Meryl Streep and music, I should mention “Music of the Heart” which I have never seen but know it exists through Meryl and through Nsync (probably why I don’t want to see it).
Happy Birthday Brendan! or, The Ice Cream Cake Dillemma
Last week we celebrated the birthday of one of the best people I know, Brendan Gilmartin! The celebration was accompanied by a delicious chocolate ice cream cake from Haagen Dasz.
The problem with this delicious chocolate ice cream cake (and all ice cream cakes) is the unthawing conundrum — not enough and you’ve got a rock, too much and you have soup. This particular ice cream cake had a solid chocolate coating which was deceptively cold just minutes before the party (note the frost in the above picture). I ran the length of the office, looking for the warmest room to heat it quickly after an hour of thawing seemed like it wasn’t going to cut it (turns out it was Mark Satlof’s office), cracked the coating when I tried to insert a single candle, and cringed in fear as Rebecca Shapiro was about to cut in. Luckily all my fear was unfounded… the opposite actually happened and it was closer to soup than rock. Melting quickly, we managed to devour it and leave nothing but a melty mess on the table. Evidence:
The ice cream cake dilemma in a nutshell. But it was all worth it! Because the cake was in fact delicious, and we all got to wish Brendan a very happy birthday!
