So this is the New Year

So it’s the last (work) day of the year and as everyone hurries about to tie up the loose ends of 2011, I thought it would be nice to share some happy (and not so happy) end-of-year tunage to help you welcome 2012 with open arms. I would share my run-of-the-mill New Year’s resolutions of read more books, go to the gym, volunteer more frequently, etc…but I think music would be much more interesting, so here it goes…

Happy Birthday, Caleb and Madelyn!

Happy Birthday, Caleb and Madelyn!!!

Monday we celebrated the birthdays of my awesome office neighbor, Caleb Shively and my Shore Fire mentor, Madelyn Frascella. After last week’s sugar-fest holiday potluck, I wasn’t sure if the gang was ready to indulge in Sugar Sweet Sunshine’s tasty treats, but that’s exactly what we did. We had an abundance of pumpkin cupcakes and a huge red velvet cake called “the Moose.” It was definitely a lot of sweets but what better time to enjoy a nice pastry or two than the holiday season? Happy holidays, everyone!

Happy Birthday, Rebecca!

Yesterday we celebrated our fabulous VP, Rebecca Shapiro’s, birthday. Though it was quite a cold day, Rebecca went with a tasty Haagen-Dazs ice cream cake, with a cookies and cream/chocolatey peanut butter mix. Seemed to be quite a crowd-pleaser! Personally, I was thrilled that the ice cream cake wasn’t hard as a rock when we were ready to devour! The art of timing ice cream cake preparation is not an easy one, ask Madelyn! Hope you enjoyed your birthday, Rebecca! And as always, I hope you enjoyed the cake! :)

Shore Fire Holiday Party at the Hi-Fi, part deux

Here are more pictures from our Holiday party.

Shore Fire Holiday Party at the Hi-Fi, part 1

Last night, Shore Fire trekked all the way to Manhattan’s Lower East Side to celebrate the Holidays. Good Friends, “El DJ”, an open bar, and Bhi Bhiman made for a  very memorable night. Special thanks to the Hi Fi for hosting us.

If you see yourself in the below pictures, leave us a comment! Check back for more pictures later today.

A Crooning Country Gem in Brooklyn

Here’s a voice you need to hear to believe.

I’ve previously blogged about Gypsy jazz virtuoso Stephane Wrembel – the Django-schooled guitarist who has composed for the last few Woody Allen pictures – and his regularly mind-blowing shows throughout NYC.

I’d now like to make note of another Brooklyn-based gem seemingly from another era: Tamar Korn, whose angelic, old-timey voice is just as jaw-droppinrg as Stephane’s breakneck swing licks. At shows with her groups Brain Cloud and Cangelosi Cards, as well as various other side projects, she croons on vintage country classics from the likes of Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Louvin Brothers, and Bob Wills.

Though an online video doesn’t come close to showcasing her live presence, below is Korn at Williamsburg’s The Drink performing with a few musically like-minded friends of mine from my hometown of Scranton:

Papas Got a Brand New Bag

Warren Haynes graces the cover of the December issue of Relix, an in-depth profile on the guitar god who has been performing and touring non-stop since he was 16 with some of the world’s greatest bands. This year he released his lauded, mighty soul record ‘Man In Motion,’ debuted his new band with a 5-month world tour and became a proud papa, welcoming a son to his happy family (congrats, Warren!).

Introducing the Sonics…to my son Eli

I slipped a couple of Sonics songs into my seven year old son Eli’s iTunes playlist, among some other things, in with the Justin Bieber and High School Musical. Wonder of wonders, he’s become a huge fan. So when I found out the Seattle proto-punkers had a Saturday show at Maxwell’s a couple weeks back, and a 4pm matinee to boot, I was so psyched club owner Todd Abramson to get us in to the sold out show.

We watched the whole rockin’ thing from front row center, Eli transfixed the whole time and as cool as can be, even when a brawl between two ladies erupted literally right over him. Hit after hit, with Eli mouthing (some of) the words. “PSYCHO” yeah! Afterwards, the merch lady – married to lead singer Jerry Roslie – took us to the downstairs dressing room for a private meeting with Eli’s idols. Here he is, onstage after the show and downstairs parked right in between Jerry and guitarist Larry Parypa.  As Eli said, it was the best Saturday of his life, and a really outstanding one for me too. Hoping for more to come.

There is a Season

Now that November is wrapping up and December is right around the corner, I thought it was fitting to honor the turn, turn, turning of seasons by posting this classic number from The Byrds. And how fitting that Shore Fire client High Moon Records is prepping the rerelease of Gene Clark’s solo album ‘Two Sides to Every Story‘!

Elisabetta Meets Italia

I just returned from a week in Rome.  It was glorious!

When I initially told SFM staffers where I was headed, I received unanimous feedback that it was among everyone’s favorite destinations.  History buff Mark Satlof was jealous – and given his recent expedition to Williamsburg, VA following my trip – I anticipate Rome is in the cards for his next trip, Rebecca Shapiro told me about how she got engaged in Rome – while on family vacation, Jon Bleicher was inspired by an early childhood trip to study art history in college, Madelyn Frascella spent a semester abroad there and Marilyn Laverty gave me explicit directions on where in the city I was to purchase a pair of authentic Italian leather gloves – a must have for every lady in the city.

It marked the first in what I hope to be many adventures overseas and without giving away too many of the stories that I’ll share with my family and the in-laws (all of whom are descending on my BK apartment for Thanksgiving!), here are a few photographic memories of my trip.

A Night time visit to the Trevi Fountain

Me & my husband Chris Zembower at the Piazza Navona which was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian and features a Tabacchi shop carrying Cuban cigars.

I went to Segatori to find gloves but I was mistaken.... Ms. Laverty had directed me to Sermoneta .... and all they had at Segatori were hats - I didn't need a hat.
