Week of Beauty

We kicked off 2012 with a pretty intense month of January, Shore Fire’s most successful January on record, actually! So what better way to relax while still being productive than bringing the beauty salon to us? The kind ladies of our Brooklyn Heights neighbors, Plaza Nails, brought their equipment to give the office manicures. Here are a few shots of the manicures in action:

The best part about the nail day was the spontaneous decision to include pedicures as well! When faced with the obstacle of adding a place for warm water into each office for a pedicure, Carrie Tolles offered an interesting yet creative solution by bringing out her crock-pot, conveniently located in her office. See for yourself below:

To sweeten the deal even more, we finished off the week with a couple of days of massages by the incredibly talented (and very friendly!) Karen Clifton Mahoney of Karma Massage. Karen hauled her chair over to Suite 1600 and turned everyone’s muscles to putty. Caleb Shively said it best when he described Karen’s work as making him “feel like a kid again.” We all left the room relaxed and revitalized, just what we needed. Speaking of Caleb, he followed instructions perfectly by bringing comfortable clothing. Check out these photos of the days of relaxation with Karen and be on the lookout for Caleb’s sweet pants:

Thank you, Marilyn, for giving us a great week of relaxation! This was such an awesome way to kick off the new year! Bring on February!

The Facebook Timeline just sparks FB memory lane

In the final days of our current Facebook layout, I find myself feeling mixed emotions about the next wave of changes. Part of me is reassured that the new layout will soon become second nature  and navigation will be no issue at all. For some reason, it’s this thought of reassurance that also bothers me. I’m still quite young but I’m not a fan of realizing how my parents must have felt my entire life,  the anxiety of trying to keep up with new technology. For example, I remember the look on my mother’s face as I tried to explain Google for the first time when I was in high school. I don’t remember exactly how I put it, but it was something along the lines of “Mom, Google is everything in the universe, like, literally everything, at your finger tips…on this 17 inch screen. Get it?” Her mind was blown, but once she got the hang of it, I got called at all hours to see what she just “Googled.” Voila, second nature. For the most part, I think the last few Facebook updates have been easy to slide into and comprehend. The most monumental change until now that I can remember was the addition of the news feed. Remember that? I’m willing to bet 90% of everyone’s first news feed was about how scary and stalkerish it was. Now how else do you navigate Facebook? Going to hundreds of friends’ pages everyday? I think not.

Which brings me to the pinnacle of my trip down Facebook memory lane – Thefacebook. It was the original. It was exclusive. University students only. No teeny-boppers posting their camera phone self-portraits in the mirror (that was still for Myspace). No apps. No parents to comment or “Like” EVERYTHING you do. No Like option at all. It was just your face on the top left corner, a minimal “About” section to the right, a comment area at the bottom and few options for finding friends and messages to the left (please see bro-page below). It was boring but it’s kind of cool to think about how different it was.

What Thefacebook once was...

Though the information available on the average FB page has increased, the basic layout has stayed consistent, until now. Yes, we’ve come a long way since those days of Thefacebook.  The exciting part is with the new timeline, I can use the new Facebook for my trip down memory lane. Year by year, even month by month, I can easily navigate all the way back to my very first wall comment. I haven’t switched to Timeline just yet, call me old fashioned. Just like I listened to cd’s until 2011 (when I was forced to purchase my first iPod and go digital), I’m going to hold on to my last breaths of old school Facebook while I can. Then I will embrace the new.

Amidst all these Facebook updates, how do I cope with the change? I listen to this:

…and of course, this version too. It doesn’t get much better than Maya Rudolph’s air drums:

Happy Birthday, Lauretta!

Last Friday we finished the week with a grand celebration of my pool partner Lauretta Charlton’s birthday. What made it so grand? Well besides the fact that Lauretta is awesome, which makes her birthday awesome by association, the cupcakes from her choice of The Chocolate Room were practically intoxicating from sweetness, leaving a sugar high to last for  hours. Well, maybe not hours but they sure picked up the end of my day! I do believe it was another crowd pleaser. Good choice, Lauretta! Hope you enjoyed one before your karaoke birthday celebration! And I hope you had an excellent birthday!

Happy Birthday, Lauretta!

Happy Birthday, Caleb and Madelyn!

Happy Birthday, Caleb and Madelyn!!!

Monday we celebrated the birthdays of my awesome office neighbor, Caleb Shively and my Shore Fire mentor, Madelyn Frascella. After last week’s sugar-fest holiday potluck, I wasn’t sure if the gang was ready to indulge in Sugar Sweet Sunshine’s tasty treats, but that’s exactly what we did. We had an abundance of pumpkin cupcakes and a huge red velvet cake called “the Moose.” It was definitely a lot of sweets but what better time to enjoy a nice pastry or two than the holiday season? Happy holidays, everyone!

Happy Birthday, Rebecca!

Yesterday we celebrated our fabulous VP, Rebecca Shapiro’s, birthday. Though it was quite a cold day, Rebecca went with a tasty Haagen-Dazs ice cream cake, with a cookies and cream/chocolatey peanut butter mix. Seemed to be quite a crowd-pleaser! Personally, I was thrilled that the ice cream cake wasn’t hard as a rock when we were ready to devour! The art of timing ice cream cake preparation is not an easy one, ask Madelyn! Hope you enjoyed your birthday, Rebecca! And as always, I hope you enjoyed the cake! :)

Happy (early!) Birthday, Matt and Anthony!

Yesterday the Shore Fire gang came together to celebrate the birthdays of Matt Hanks and Anthony D’Amato before the holiday vacations kick off. There was a burst of flavors in the Suite 16 kitchen with a wide variety of cupcakes from Butter Lane. The seasonal menu brought us fall flavors including honey cinnamon and pumpkin, as well as year around favorites like espresso and french chocolate (aka Diva Chocolate, gaining its nickname from its highly time sensitive, quick melting chocolate icing). I was advised at the bakery that these “Diva Chocolate” cupcakes “don’t travel well” but they definitely hit the spot and won over the hearts of the SFM crew. One might say they were… Divalicious.

Although I missed the action shot of Matt and Andy blowing out the candles, here’s a nice “reaction shot” after their Happy Birthday song as the guys got ready to dig into those cupcakes. Happy early birthday, guys! Enjoy your vacations too!!!

Happy Birthday, Matt and Anthony!

Happy Birthday, Chris B!

Yesterday we celebrated Chris Brudzinski’s birthday in a slightly different fashion. Rather than the traditional birthday cake party, we had a breakfast party with bagels and coffee from La Bagel Delight. The assortment of bagels was incredible, with everything from egg bagels to onion to pumpernickel. Chris, I hope you enjoyed your time off, but I really hope the soccer theme and bagel breakfast made coming back to work a little more enjoyable!

Beat The ‘Betes

You know when you’re walking down the street and you see someone approach you with a clipboard and stack of stickers, so you pretend to answer your phone and look away? Well, this weekend, I had the clipboard! This past Sunday, a few friends and I teamed up to help out the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk To Cure Diabetes in Battery Park. Specifically, we set out to round up as many new JDRF advocates as we could. It was a little rough at first but once you get talking to a few people, you really find your groove. We heard some pretty touching stories from some amazing folks about their connections and relationships with those with diabetes. Personally, 3 out of my 4 grandparents carried the disease, but I have yet to encounter Juvenile Diabetes. I learned a lot about the disease (ie the difference between Type I and Type II) and, more importantly, about JDRF’s efforts to end it. A minute of your day and a signature is all we needed to spread the word and help the cause by generating government support for research. Interested in becoming an advocate or have a story to share? All you have to do is click here or text ACTION to 37420.

Me with fellow recruiters and friends, Dominique Vaughan and Alexi Melvin (Recruitment Coordinator).

We were hoping for a little musical accompaniment from one of the most famous JDRF advocates, Nick Jonas, but he wasn’t able to make it. The kids would have loved that! Instead, the walkers prepped with a party atmosphere all morning with Z100 DJ’s blasting hits from Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger,” my personal favorite, to Lady Gaga’s “Edge Of Glory.”

Our newest little advocate. We were recruiting all ages!

If helping a fantastic cause wasn’t sweet enough, Shore Fire was kind enough to make it even sweeter by giving me an extra vacation day for community service. Our company wants to promote giving back to the community every way possible. This is one thing that really sets us apart from other companies. The joy of lending a helping hand is fulfilling enough, but it’s definitely a nice bonus and incentive to get an extra day away from your desk to relax! Thank you, Shore Fire!

Happy Birthday, Tyler!

This week, we celebrated the birthday of the oh so delightful Tyler Cannon. The Shore Fire gang gathered to enjoy a unique carrot cake, described as carrot cake with cheesecake on top, from Lady Bird Bakery. Tyler was fortunate enough to have a 3-day weekend for Labor Day and his birthday, but I hope the cake made coming back to work after the long weekend a little bit easier!

Sr. VP Mark Satlof is a connoisseur of many things, from rock & roll to art to Chinese food to all things NYC. Check out Mark’s record collection and his wonderful assortment of music portraits by founding Mekons member Jon Langford in this shot of him in his Shore Fire office as he shows off two of his recent birthday gifts, a Coney Island beach towel and NYC subway system pajamas, both of which are so popular that they had to be back ordered.
