Lucy hosts Wainwright / Roche family reunion at new album party

Went to City Winery last night to check out Lucy Wainwright Roche’s album release party for ‘Lucy’ and found a family reunion happening on stage, as guests Suzzy Roche, Maggie Roches, Terry Roche, Loudon Wainwright III, and feted her. The true star of the night was Lucy’s voice, which was beautiful! Also joining her on stage was surprise guest Ira Glass, who also appears on the new album. Spotted in the crowd was Dick Connette, who won a GRAMMY as producer of Loudon’s 2009 album ‘High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project.’

Lucy seemed to have a ton of family and friends in the audience and it made some warm, often hysterical banter (my favorite line was when she joked that she couldn’t get her therapist to come to the show). Congrats, Lucy!

the rainbow connection

at the risk of being a 1 trick blogger, some pretty rad stuff has happened outside my window lately, such as this ginormous rainbow. it appeared, lingered for about 3 minutes, and was gone.

the view from the top

Well, not quite the top. We’re on the 16th floor here and there are some great views to be had. But the view I have out of my office was nothing compared to a maintenance working who ascended outside my window. I’m not particularly afraid of heights, but i don’t think i could do his job!

One of the Best Shows I Have Seen: Jason D. Williams This Week

I saw one of the best shows I’ve ever seen this week: Jason D. Williams playing to an overflowing Lakeside Lounge. The piano-pounding man played an incredibly exuberant, playful, joyous, wild show. It was easy to see why he’s got famous fans, including fellow Arkansan Bill Clinton, who once sat in with him. I also got to see Jason tape a set at SIRIUS XM; their Outlaw Country DJ Mojo Nixon said to Jason, “You’re f%*^@#% great.” Here’s a clip of Jason D’s hands rocking the piano at a SIRIUS XM taping:

In the movie “Great Balls of Fire,” it’s Jason D’s hands you see playing the piano. Here’s a clip in concert of Jason playing the new “Sanctified,” a song that tells the story of how he played piano at Al Green’s church in Memphis:

His wonderfully twisted new album ‘Killer Instincts’ comes out Oct 26. Producer Todd Snider allowed Jason to write outrageous, sometimes bizarre, sometimes hysterical lyrics. It’s, um, killer stuff!

The View from My Office Just Now

Just before we got enveloped in clouds & rain…

Alejandro Escovedo Shows NYC Fashion Week How Austin Dresses Up

Had the pleasure of attending the John Varvatos / Moonshine launch party with Alejandro Escovedo at the Varvatos store on Bowery, which you’d know better as the site of CBGB’s. Alejandro played a raucous set of rock & roll, on a bill alongside Alice Cooper, ZZ Top, Cherie Currie, Wayne Kramer with Handsome Dick Manitoba, and Perry Farrell. Alejandro also joined Ian Hunter during his version of “All The Young Dudes”:

Jimmy Kimmel introduced Alejandro to the crowd. Here they are chatting about the coincidence that Kimmel’s house band leader is Cleto Escovedo, also from the San Antonio area:

Here’s Alejandro with the man of the hour, John Varvatos:

Naturally, the party begged the question of whether it’s always fashion week for NYC, or for Alejandro for that matter; he always looks incredibly stylish.

More good pics over at Brooklyn Vegan.

The Rocker & The Hunter

Alejandro Escovedo displayed force, grace, humanity, and triumph on the bandstand at City Winery last night (and over WFUV’s airwaves). I had a couple of favorite moments: new song “Faith” was particularly anthemic, “Tender Heart” rocked to the core, and his duet with Ian Hunter on Mott the Hoople’s “I Wish I Was Your Mother” during the encore was amazing! Here’s Alejandro with Ian:

That is SO rock & roll

I caught Austin garage-soul Nick Curran’s set yesterday at the Big Apple BBQ Festival. Here he is with Shore Fire friend and true rock and roller Dick Manitoba. Don’t miss Curran’s t-shirt: “What would Joan Jett do?”

… so rock & roll!

Alejandro Escovedo Caps Off Week W/ Simon & Garfunkel Tribute In Central Park

Alejandro Escovedo has had a busy week!

First, he taped a killer set with his band The Sensitive Boys for SIRIUS XM. It’ll air Sunday, June 27 on the Loft Channel with Dave Marsh. It was a blistering electric set and highlights were new single “Anchor,” “Undesired” (my favorite of the night), and “Down in the Bowery.” David Pulkingham played some incredible guitar while Jenni Muldaur and Serena Jean joined the band to sing backup.

Here’s Alejandro with Chris Taillie and me. I’m the bearded one. Just kidding. L-R: Chris Taillie, Alejandro, me.

Alejandro performed at the Summerstage Gala, a tribute to Simon & Garfunkel with both in attendance! Here’s Alejandro backstage talking to Loudon Wainwright III. Loudon and daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche sang incredibly together.

It was a magical night! Here’s Alejandro with Willie Nile singing a show-closing rendition of “The Boxer” that brought them a standing ovation:

Also spotted backstage were Joan Osborne, Cory Chisel, Brendan Benson, Jill Sobule, Livingston Taylor, Ben Gibbard, St. Vincent, Larry Campbell, Jorma Kaukonen, and Mayor Bloomberg.

What Not To Write

I loved Flavorwire’s “Music Review Cliché Bingo“. Here’s one of the three bingo cards:

In an era where everyone is OD’d on the volume of material coming into the inbox, we feel that it’s more important than ever to write effectively and concisely.

In summation, this irresistible, haunting gem is an atmospheric return to form.
