Ice Ice, Baby

Last night the Shore Fire staff braved the cold for a very special winter outing. Bundled up tight, we took to the ice at The Standard Hotel’s outdoor ice rink, right under Manhattan’s High Line park. With hot chocolate and cider aplenty (and a few strategically placed heat lamps), brave Shorefirians were either showing off, cheering from the sides, or holding on for dear life. See below for some fun pictures of a great time.

Happy Birthday Lauretta!

Earlier this month, we celebrated the birthday of the lovely Lauretta Charlton with Crumbs cupcakes (we got our very own bakeshop on Montague St this past summer!) and a beautifully in-tune version of “Happy Birthday to You.”

Below, Lauretta blows out her candles while Mark Satlof and Elizabeth Lutz look on….

And here, Shorefirians chat and get sprinkles everywhere!

Birthday month continues: Rebecca and Nancie style!

Last week we celebrated Rebecca Shapiro and Nancie Martin’s birthdays! This double birthday featured double treats too, Nancie going with colorful cupcakes from (my favorite) Dean Street bakery, One Girl Cookies, and Rebecca choosing an ice cream cake from Haagen-Dasz.

A delicious double delight! Happy Birthday ladies!

Santa Claus is Coming to Shore Fire

Or came, rather. Our staff holiday dinner had a surprise visit from the jolly one as Jon’s video showed, but what you didn’t see was the line to sit on Santa’s lap, and the promises we’ve been good this year. Check out our pictures with Santa below:

Marilyn Laverty and Madelyn Frascella: Nice list.

Rob Krauser and wife Natalie!

Lauretta Charlton's been good this year!

Has Carrie Tolles been Naughty or Nice?

Chris Thieke and Santa: Bros for life.

Andy Silva's definitely on the Nice list!

Brendan Gilmartin and a lovely lady friend!

Matt Hanks and wife Courtney!

Chris Brudzinski and the Man in Red.

Cupcake Party!

Last week, we had a pre-Thanksgiving treat, celebrating the birthdays of Matt Hanks and Anthony D’Amato!

By special request, our delicious cupcakes came from Red Hook’s Baked, an adorable bakery with some amazing cake flavors. Matt went with the “Sweet & Salty,” dark chocolate and salted caramel, and Anthony chose the “Diner Double Dark,” devil’s food and chocolate.

Matt and Anthony check out their cards while the cupcakes get passed around

Happy Birthday, you two!

Bagel Birthday!

The latest Shore Fire birthday was our stalwart Business Manager, Chris Brudzinski! As the kind of man who likes to go his own way (and doesn’t really like sweets), Chris’ birthday was a bagel breakfast bonanza!

Here, Chris blows out the candles on his impressive bagel tower from Court Street’s own La Bagel Delight.

And here, the hungry hoards dive in!

Happy Birthday, Chris!!

How to Feel Like a Rock Star

Playing the dive-bar circuit in NYC doesn’t often make you feel like a rock star. The onstage bliss is often book-ended by lugging around all your own gear and begging your friends to pay a cover to see you. Don’t get me wrong, it is always worth it, but you are certainly never in danger of losing perspective.

My advice for small-time bands who want to feel big? PLAY A ROOF.

Seriously. A rooftop show with my band Arvel sounded like the worst idea I’d ever heard (who wants to carry a bass amp up 4 flights of stairs?). Not to mention the forecast called for heavy winds. But playing that set was by far the most bad-ass I’ve ever felt.

Second piece of advice? Bring a photographer. You will get great shots like these:

Who is that crazy cool rock chick?? Oh wait, it’s me!

During set-up the wind was literally blowing the cymbals over, but by the end there were people on nearby roofs watching and others stopped and staring up from the street. If that’s not feeling like a Rock Star, I don’t know what is.

Happy Birthday to Rob

In this world of ever-evolving technology, we decided that birthdays here at Shore Fire needed a little upgrade. The always-cheerful birthday boy, Rob Krauser, was our test subject.

Instead of the traditional blowing-out-the-candles pic, check out Rob’s live-action candle extinguishing, and the utter beauty of the staff’s combined voices, in the first Shore Fire Birthday video below:

That beautiful cake is a pistachio confection by the LES’s Sugar Sweet Sunshine.

Absolutely no one was embarrassed during the making of this film.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROB!

Black Forest Birthday

Do you know what a Black Forest cake is? I’d never heard of it before Elizabeth Lutz asked me to track one down for her recent birthday. Apparently many New York bakeries don’t know what it is either. My go-to’s kept telling me they didn’t make them, but East Village stalwart Veniero’s came through.

Elizabeth blows out her candles, secure in the knowledge that there is  awesomeness about to come….

You see, a Black Forest cake is layered with chocolate cake, whipped cream and cherries (as well as some sort of liquor), that essentially form a pie within a cake. A PIE WITHIN A CAKE!!??!!! My mind is officially blown.

A closer look at those gorgeous layers….

Happy birthday, Elizabeth! And thank you for taking me into the Black Forest.

Double Birthday Delight

Twice the cake, twice the fun!

This time we celebrated the births of the ever-adorable Carrie Tolles and our second in command, Mark Satlof.

Despite the fact that they both look incredibly serious in this picture (shouldn’t have let fellow staffer Jon Bleicher take the camera!), they both had a great time and delicious cakes. Carrie’s was a red velvet cake and Mark’s a chocolate sour cream cake with hazelnut praline frosting, both from Ladybird Bakery in Park Slope. With two cakes to devour, we all left this party pretty stuffed!

Happy Birthday you two!
