Best Songs Sung By That Other Band Member

The L Magazine recently had an article about the greatest songs NOT sung by a band’s lead singer, which included one of my favorites, “Guns of Brixton” by The Clash, sung by bassist (and my one true love) Paul Simonon. You can check out The L’s list here, but it got me thinking about what other songs could be added….

I invariably love any New Pornographers song sung by Dan Bejar, and though the band doesn’t have one strict lead singer, his songs are fewer and farther between. I think my fave is ‘Electric Version’ track “Ballad of a Comeback Kid”:

Quite the opposite, I tend to skip any Arcade Fire song sung by Regine Chassagne, with the exception of total jam “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)” on ‘The Suburbs’:

What other songs should be added to the list?

Perfecting The Wedding Playlist

I'm on the left. The bride is in white.

Over the weekend I served as Maid of Honor at my sister’s beautiful wedding by the sea in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Pre-wedding I was tasked with compiling a slide-show of photos of the happy couple, from baby pictures to engagement photos…. a daunting task. And not just because my sister is unusually snap-happy with her camera, but because I also had to choose the music.

I scoured my iTunes and found little that was appropriate for a wedding. My first instinct was to use The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition,” one of the most gorgeous songs I know:

But it turned out not to be long enough. I settled on Arcade Fire’s “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” because the beat fit the quick pace of the photos and it’s nearly 5 minutes long. Plus, it IS about falling in love and having babies and growing old, right?

This process got me thinking about alternative wedding songs. My sister and her husband chose Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love” as their entrance and first dance songs, both atypical and inspired choices, I thought.

But what is the discerning music fan to do? What romantic non-obvious wedding songs are out there? Here’s the (admittedly short) list I came up with:

  • Band of Horses “Marry Song”
  • The Beach Boys “God Only Knows”
  • Guillemots “Made Up Love Song #43″
  • Old 97’s “Question” (ok, this one’s a little obvious, but I love Rhett Miller)
  • The Cure “Just Like Heaven”
  • Rogue Wave “Maps” (Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover)
  • Ben Folds “The Luckiest”

What am I missing?

A Double Cheesecake Birthday

Yesterday we celebrated a double birthday in honor of the lovely Carrie Tolles and the delightful Mark Satlof! For cakes, they went for a pair of cheesecakes (plain and strawberry-topped) from the legendary Junior’s of Brooklyn.

Carrie and Mark blow out their candles.

Carrie and Mark open their cards while Daivd, Andy, Tyler, Kyle and Jessica look on.

The staff dig in.

Happy birthday, you two!

The Mystery Of The Pink Candy

It’s not a secret that we here at Shore Fire like to eat. You can almost always find a snack on our kitchen table that’s up for the taking, whether it’s from someone’s exotic vacation or just a random baking kick.

But it’s never been like this.

Every day this week there has been a bowl of different PINK candies in the SFM kitchen.

Monday it was jelly beans.

Tuesday it was m&m’s.

We made quick work of these...

Wednesday it was mini malted milk balls.

These were so addicting...

Today it was more mini malted milk balls.

mmmmmmmm

What will it be tomorrow?

And where is all this pink candy coming from??? Not that I’m complaining…..

Happy Birthday Brendan! or, The Ice Cream Cake Dillemma

Last week we celebrated the birthday of one of the best people I know, Brendan Gilmartin! The celebration was accompanied by a delicious chocolate ice cream cake from Haagen Dasz.

Brendan blows out the candle on the cake in question

The problem with this delicious chocolate ice cream cake (and all ice cream cakes) is the unthawing conundrum — not enough and you’ve got a rock, too much and you have soup. This particular ice cream cake had a solid chocolate coating which was deceptively cold just minutes before the party (note the frost in the above picture). I ran the length of the office, looking for the warmest room to heat it quickly after an hour of thawing seemed like it wasn’t going to cut it (turns out it was Mark Satlof’s office), cracked the coating when I tried to insert a single candle, and cringed in fear as Rebecca Shapiro was about to cut in. Luckily all my fear was unfounded… the opposite actually happened and it was closer to soup than rock. Melting quickly, we managed to devour it and leave nothing but a melty mess on the table. Evidence:

The previously mentioned "melty mess"

The ice cream cake dilemma in a nutshell. But it was all worth it! Because the cake was in fact delicious, and we all got to wish Brendan a very happy birthday!

Let them eat cake, delicious cake

Last week we gathered to celebrate the birthday of Chris Taillie, Shorefirian extraordinaire and all-around awesome person.

Here, Chris poses for the popular blowing-out-the-candles shot. The delicious cake was a confection courtesy of one of our local favorites, One Girl Cookies, and was a combination of the birthday boy’s choosing: vanilla cake, chocolate buttercream frosting and a filling of raspberry jam. Yum!

Here, Chris enjoys a slice with David, Jessica, Carrie, Mark, Brendan, & Kyle. Happy Birthday, Chris!

The Car Test

When you’re with a band for awhile and it gets pretty serious, you start thinking about making a baby record together. Sometimes, when you lead hectic independent lives, this process can take longer than you bargained for. But there are a lot of significant and memorable moments along the way, and today my dear band mates and I reached a big one: The Car Test.

Also known as The Shitty Speaker Test, The Car Test is what bands do to test the almost-final mixes of their recordings to hear how they’ll sound to the average listener on non-studio quality speakers. Like crappy car speakers.

You may remember the scene in the movie Once (starring The Swell Season’s Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova) where the band piles into a car to hear their newly recorded demos:

Yay! It still sounds good through terrible speakers!

My band mate, Darrell, loved this idea so much he’s rounded up the group, rented a zipcar and will brave driving the streets of NYC for the first time in order to do this.

Wish us luck!

Another Delectable Double Birthday

March is officially birthday month here at Shore Fire, and yesterday we got to celebrate 2 more! Our delightful birthday boys were Jon Bliecher and Chris Thieke. With a tasty (though slightly melty, sorry!) ice cream cake from Haagen-Dazs and an unbelievable Salted Carmel Apple pie from Gowanus bakery Four and Twenty Blackbird, we had a delicious time.

Jon and Chris blow out their candles

Happy Birthday, boys!

Double the birthday, double the fun!

This week we celebrated the births of our own Andy Silva and Josh Page! This double birthday celebration was complemented by the always popular cupcakes of Crumbs! True to their name, these tasty treats left sprinkles EVERYWHERE.

Rebecca passes out the cupcakes, and Josh and Andy check out their cards while Chris and Nick look on.

A very happy birthday to you both!

Shore Fire’s Top Oscar Picks

Our office Oscar Pool is heating up, and as Sunday draws near, we wanted to share our predictions for the big winners. Personally, I think it’ll be be one of those historic years where the Best Picture and Best Director won’t go to the same film, but that’s just me. Oh and Tron: Legacy was robbed. On to the Predictions!

Here’s what Shore Fire thinks about 10 top categories (chosen by me):

Best Picture: Consensus is for The King’s Speech, with others supporting The Social Network

Best Director: David Fincher is the nearly unanimous choice for The Social Network, with others voting for True Grit and The King’s Speech

Best Actor: Unanimous support for Colin Firth

Best Actress: Natalie Portman is the front-runner, with some support for underdogs Jennifer Lawrence and Annette Bening

Best Supporting Actor: Most votes here are for Christian Bale, with others supporting Geoffrey Rush

Best Supporting Actress: One of the more divisive fields, Melissa Leo just barely gets the most votes followed closely by Hailee Steinfeld

Best Score: The Social Network on top, followed by The King’s Speech

Best Song: Another split vote, the most for “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3

Best Documentary: A tie between Inside Job and Exit Through the Gift Shop, with a few supporting Restrepo

Best Visual Effects: Inception is the favorite here, some opting for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 and Alice In Wonderland

There you have it, Shore Fire Staff picks for this year’s Oscars. Who are you rooting for this Sunday?
