Ooooh saaaay caaaan youuu seeeee…

I’m sure that the majority of the television-watching American public made sure to take in the Super Bowl yesterday and the highly publicized half-time show with Madonna, Nicki Minaj & M.I.A. And while the half-time performance was chock-full of set changes, choreography and guest stars, I thought that the incomparable yet still somehow under appreciated Kelly Clarkson really stole the show with her above-average performance of the National Anthem.

It seems to be a trend nowadays for stars to butcher/lipsynch/vocally complicate the National Anthem, so I found it extremely refreshing to see Ms. Clarkson sing it not only correctly, but also with genuine emotion and talent. Leave it to Kelly and her American Idol-winning pipes to score a touchdown (yeah..that was corny, I know). Check it out below and let us know what is one of your favorite renditions of the National Anthem.

So this is the New Year

So it’s the last (work) day of the year and as everyone hurries about to tie up the loose ends of 2011, I thought it would be nice to share some happy (and not so happy) end-of-year tunage to help you welcome 2012 with open arms. I would share my run-of-the-mill New Year’s resolutions of read more books, go to the gym, volunteer more frequently, etc…but I think music would be much more interesting, so here it goes…

Death Cab for Cutie – The New Year

No Doubt – It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

Motion City Soundtrack – Resolution

There is a Season

Now that November is wrapping up and December is right around the corner, I thought it was fitting to honor the turn, turn, turning of seasons by posting this classic number from The Byrds. And how fitting that Shore Fire client High Moon Records is prepping the rerelease of Gene Clark’s solo album ‘Two Sides to Every Story‘!

Tis the Season To Be Terrified

It might be because it’s October and Halloween’s right around the corner. It might be because I finally got around to seeing John Carpenter’s The Thing over the weekend. It also might be because I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately hanging around NYC’s Blackout Haunted House — seriously one of the most awesomely terrifying, horrifically fantastic things I’ve ever been to. But whatever if it is, I’ve been in quite a spooky mood recently.

And since I am often the person getting scared out of their skin by their own shadow, I thought I’d switch roles and try to give some fright back to the world. I’ve hunted around online and found what I believe to be three of the scariest/creepiest/WTF?iest music videos ever made. Hope you sleep tight tonight! :)

Aphex Twin – “Come To Daddy

Tool - “Ænema”

Pink Floyd – “Another Brick In the Wall (Part II)

Huggin’ and a-kissin’, dancin’ and a-lovin’

This past weekend, I ventured out of NY and into NJ for my sister/future bro-in-law’s conjoined bachelor/ette party. And being that nearly all of the loving couple’s friends were either born or raised in the 80s, they threw their bash at the aptly named dance club The Breakfast Club. And, you guessed it, they only play the most memorable and hottest jams from the 80s!

Being that I was wearing diapers for the majority of my 80s experience, one might think that I would be out of touch with said generation. However, I’ve seen enough VH1 flashback shows to know my way around this most memorable musical decade. And I was beyond thrilled that they blasted some of my personal 80s favorites:

The B-52’s’ Love Shack

Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun

A-ha’s Take On Me

Madonna’s “Material Girl

So what would you die to hear play if you were kicking it up at the Breakfast Club?

Nice Day for a White Wedding

This past Saturday, my boyfriend and I volunteered with the Pop Up Chapel in Central Park, which held weddings for 24 same-sex couples celebrating the Marriage Equality Act. Aside from scoring a nasty sunburn and having to deal with some selective rude comments from disapproving passerbys, it was a wonderful experience.

Pre-sunburn

And of course as with most things I encounter, all those weddings triggered some musical pondering. What would be the perfect playlist for a wedding? I immediately thought back to last Thursday when I ventured off to Terminal 5 to witness the phenomenal John Butler Trio’s show in NYC. As an encore, John was joined on stage by his wife and the two of them performed “Losing You” which is probably one of the sweetest and most beautiful love songs I have ever heard. Check it out:

What do you think is the PERFECT love song? Are you married? What was your wedding song?

Music to Chill By

Summer is known for being a time to relax, kick up one’s heels and forget all the worries in the world. But in the music PR world, this sometimes seems like anything but the case. Between artists ramping up their tour schedule and preparing new Autumn releases, sometimes the June/July/August month cycle can seem like the busiest months of the year!

So when the weekend rolls around, I definitely try to let myself cool down and recharge my batteries. And what better way to get yourself in the ultimate chillaxing mindset than with some atmospheric and calming tunage?! Of course the universally acclaimed new Bon Iver album has been my most recent go-to in such an occasion, but here are some of my other suggestions if you need to release some tension and calm your mind:

Copeland’s ‘You Are My Sunshine

Yeah, yeah…their earlier albums often get lumped in the overabused & overused “emo” genre tag, but ‘You Are My Sunshine‘ finds Copeland reinventing their sound and mellowing out to the Nth degree. Recommended for providing ambience to a small rooftop get-together.

Karate’s “Unsolved

Aside from my sister (who turned me onto this group), I don’t know a single other soul who has even heard of Karate. And it’s a shame! Being a big fan of the poetic arts, I was immediately captivated by the spoken word quality to the vocals/lyrics and the minimalist nature of the music. Recommended for when you need the perfect mellow early evening soundtrack to walk you home from work.

Sigur Rós‘ “( )

This jarring yet calming collection by Sigur Rós is comprised largely of simple piano work and a fictitious language made up by leader singer Jónsi. Utterly heart-breaking, but still SOOOOO good. Recommended for repeated playing while falling asleep.

So what chill-out music do you find yourself listening to when you need a musical escape?

I want to ride my bicycle

To anyone reading this, please know that I am already aware of how strange and bizarre this is, but I am 25 years old and up until last weekend I was 100% unable to ride a bicycle.

I know…I know…it’s a staple of childhood. It’s something that EVERYONE under the age 10 seems to be able to do. It’s pretty much the defining characteristic of adolescent summers. And alas, I spent the first 25 years of my life unable and unwilling to learn. I vaguely remember attempting the cursed vehicle when I was a young tot and crashing into a tree and vowing to never try again.

But a trip to Prospect Park and some egging on by my peers got me up on that bike, and a miracle took place. After dramatically falling off and scoring some wicked battle scars, I finally was able to keep my balance and ride my childhood arch nemesis. Check out my moment of glory (featuring some not so graceful attempts at braking with my legs at the end):

To further continue my self-promoting parade of personal accomplishment, here are a few songs about the beauty of bike-riding:

Queen – “Bicycle Race

Pink Floyd – “Bike

Flobots – “Handlebars

Got the Rainy Day Blues?

"I can't stand the rain against my window."

Over here in good ole Brooklyn, it’s currently raining cats & dogs & lions & tigers & bears etc…I’m all for Spring showers and rejevenating our flora friends with an occasional rainfall, but the seemingly non-stop rain we’ve been experiencing since Friday is really starting to take its toll on me!

And since my personal shore fire sure fire cure for a case of the rainy day blues is to blast some Missy Elliott, I thought I’d kick it old school and blast away these nasty storm clouds with some ’90s hip-hop.

What are some of your favorite rainy day songs?

Lets Get Physical

As wonderful as it is to freeze to death and have to shovel your way out of feet of snow and ice (sarcasm overload), I must say that I am mighty glad that the seasons have changed and that gradually the temperature is rising.

I know that I’ve been counting down the days until it’s warmth enough to go jogging outside and enjoy the fresh warmer weather. For me, few things can rival the feeling of stretching out and going for a long run in the park. And of course, my favorite part of jogging is creating the perfect running mix to blast and daydream to as I exercise!

A truly effective running playlist needs to include a mix of high-energy music (that you can run in-beat with) that mesh a plethora of genres together to keep your running experience varied and exciting! So last night, in preparation for the weekend, I put together my personal “2011 Springtime Outdoor Extravaganza Jogging Mania” Playlist!:

1. Kings and Queens” – 30 Seconds to Mars
2. We Are Golden” – Mika
3. Do It” – Nelly Furtado
4. Holiday” – The Get Up Kids
5. Backstabber” – Ke$ha
6. Go Your Own Way” – Fleetwood Mac
7. Sweetness” – Jimmy Eat World
8. Bionic” – Christina Aguilera
9. Hurricane J” – The Hold Steady
10. Earth Intruders” – Björk
11. Don’t Stop Me Now” – Queen
12. Bug a Boo” – Destiny’s Child
13. Emma Discovery” – The Anniversary
14. Roman’s Revenge” – Nicki Minaj feat. Eminem
15. Better Open the Door” – Motion City Soundtrack

Like it? Give it a play during your next outdoor jaunt! Hate it? Tell me what would be on your playlist!
