Introducing the Sonics…to my son Eli

I slipped a couple of Sonics songs into my seven year old son Eli’s iTunes playlist, among some other things, in with the Justin Bieber and High School Musical. Wonder of wonders, he’s become a huge fan. So when I found out the Seattle proto-punkers had a Saturday show at Maxwell’s a couple weeks back, and a 4pm matinee to boot, I was so psyched club owner Todd Abramson to get us in to the sold out show.

We watched the whole rockin’ thing from front row center, Eli transfixed the whole time and as cool as can be, even when a brawl between two ladies erupted literally right over him. Hit after hit, with Eli mouthing (some of) the words. “PSYCHO” yeah! Afterwards, the merch lady – married to lead singer Jerry Roslie – took us to the downstairs dressing room for a private meeting with Eli’s idols. Here he is, onstage after the show and downstairs parked right in between Jerry and guitarist Larry Parypa.  As Eli said, it was the best Saturday of his life, and a really outstanding one for me too. Hoping for more to come.

There is a Season

Now that November is wrapping up and December is right around the corner, I thought it was fitting to honor the turn, turn, turning of seasons by posting this classic number from The Byrds. And how fitting that Shore Fire client High Moon Records is prepping the rerelease of Gene Clark’s solo album ‘Two Sides to Every Story‘!

Elisabetta Meets Italia

I just returned from a week in Rome.  It was glorious!

When I initially told SFM staffers where I was headed, I received unanimous feedback that it was among everyone’s favorite destinations.  History buff Mark Satlof was jealous – and given his recent expedition to Williamsburg, VA following my trip – I anticipate Rome is in the cards for his next trip, Rebecca Shapiro told me about how she got engaged in Rome – while on family vacation, Jon Bleicher was inspired by an early childhood trip to study art history in college, Madelyn Frascella spent a semester abroad there and Marilyn Laverty gave me explicit directions on where in the city I was to purchase a pair of authentic Italian leather gloves – a must have for every lady in the city.

It marked the first in what I hope to be many adventures overseas and without giving away too many of the stories that I’ll share with my family and the in-laws (all of whom are descending on my BK apartment for Thanksgiving!), here are a few photographic memories of my trip.

A Night time visit to the Trevi Fountain

Me & my husband Chris Zembower at the Piazza Navona which was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian and features a Tabacchi shop carrying Cuban cigars.

I went to Segatori to find gloves but I was mistaken.... Ms. Laverty had directed me to Sermoneta .... and all they had at Segatori were hats - I didn't need a hat.

A beautiful view of the Colosseo from Palatine Hill during magic hour.

Happy (early!) Birthday, Matt and Anthony!

Yesterday the Shore Fire gang came together to celebrate the birthdays of Matt Hanks and Anthony D’Amato before the holiday vacations kick off. There was a burst of flavors in the Suite 16 kitchen with a wide variety of cupcakes from Butter Lane. The seasonal menu brought us fall flavors including honey cinnamon and pumpkin, as well as year around favorites like espresso and french chocolate (aka Diva Chocolate, gaining its nickname from its highly time sensitive, quick melting chocolate icing). I was advised at the bakery that these “Diva Chocolate” cupcakes “don’t travel well” but they definitely hit the spot and won over the hearts of the SFM crew. One might say they were… Divalicious.

Although I missed the action shot of Matt and Andy blowing out the candles, here’s a nice “reaction shot” after their Happy Birthday song as the guys got ready to dig into those cupcakes. Happy early birthday, guys! Enjoy your vacations too!!!

Happy Birthday, Matt and Anthony!

Time flies and Fruit flies

When super talented singer/songwriter Nikki Jean and I lunched at The London Hotel’s Maze restaurant, we were tickled to see star chef Gordon Ramsay, looking thinner and younger than on his TV show, as he walked briskly through the restaurant to his kitchen. We had a great lunch (NJ proclaimed her fare as ‘the best grilled cheese sandwich ever’) but were surprised to spy a coupla cute little bugs (both flying and crawling) at our table. Hey, if we had wanted a picnic, we would have gone to Central Park… If Chef Ramsay had returned from the kitchen, we would have enjoyed pointing out our little insect visitors to the picky prickly owner!

Win Prizes from the Shore Fire Vault

Shore Fire has collected hundreds and hundreds of CDs, DVDs, Vinyl Records, and miscellaneous swag over the years. Instead of letting it sit there, we are giving it away!

Every Friday, check out our Facebook page for our “From The Vault Friday”. We give away a prize to a random fan each week. All you need to do is ‘like’ our page and answer the weekly question. That easy!

We’ve given away vinyl records from Nick Lowe, box sets from Johnny Cash, countless CDs, DVDS, and we’re always finding new treasures in the depths of our vault (re: stock room).

Be sure to check us out on Facebook every Friday. Here is a preview of what will be given away for the next couple of weeks:

From Dylan’s first ever interview to Hendrix’s last

Rock’s Backpages is the ultimate online library of rock journalism and to celebrate its 10th anniversary founder Barney Hoskyns is making some of the collection’s best pieces – those long out of sight or never published – available for free until Nov 30.

It’s full of eye-popping stuff  – Lennon and McCartney talk about songwriting circa ‘66 in a never-before  published interview for Newsweek; Lou Reed gives Lester Bangs a hard time; Hendrix paints a picture of what could have been during his final interview; Kurt Cobain opens up to Jon Savage about his childhood and there’s tons more.

Halloween Redux: Shore Fire Kids run Wild

Halloween’s a big time here at Shore Fire, particularly for parents in the office. Who says there’s no good trick or treatin’ in NYC?  You can get a load of costumes from year’s past here

The cold forced Matt’s kids Sally (on left) and Emma (on right) to bundle up this year, so you might have a hard time telling that Sally is a genie, and Emma is the goddess Athena.  What’s not so hard to tell is that Matt agreed to Sally’s request that he dress as a “male nurse.”

Here’s another shot of Sally and Emma with their pals from down the street, Emmet (the Stormtrooper) and Louisa (also Athena!)

Rebecca Shapiro decided to venture into big kid territory this year — the haunted streets of Chelsea- with her 5-year-old daughter Roxy and 2-year-old son Simon. Roxy dressed as “Strawberry Shortcake” sans hot pink wig and a groggy just-woken-up-from-his-nap Simon as a little cow.

Uptown, on 138th St., the crowd of kids gets bigger and bigger every year in what’s become a cherished tradition; this year we couldn’t fit all the children on one stoop. In homemade costumes, that’s my son Eli, far left, as a cyborg, and Leo, far right, as “Duct Tape Man.”

Here’s Eli and Leo with our next door neighbors, Lenny and Rani.
