Amanda Shires Rocks Rockwood

I recently had the immense pleasure of catching gorgeous Southern songstress Amanda Shires perform an intimate set here in NYC at Rockwood Music Hall. Amanda’s new album, ‘Carrying Lightning,’ just came out this month and it’s an instant favorite of mine–powerful lyrics and melodies that just embed themselves right in your brain. The set was a stripped-down duo format, with Amanda handling vocals and fiddle and Rod Picott on acoustic guitar. The next day I was lucky enough to join Amanda and Rod at the studios of WNYC, where they performed live on Soundcheck and once again floored me.

The best part? Amanda’s coming back to NYC on June 2 to perform at The Living Room. You can count on seeing me there!

Not only is The Iridium is jumping this week but Warren Haynes is in town showing off his latest album which features the legendary guitarist as a rockstar vocalist. According to the Boston Globe’s take on his album ‘Man In Motion’ -  “The singing, writing, and arrangements are as vital as Haynes’s typically exemplary guitar playing.”

The Beatles Frontman George Michael

I remember being a teenager. It wasn’t that long ago. So I didn’t think I would agree with much on the “I Hate Young People” blog.

But, alas. In the following video, teenagers in New York are asked really basic questions about The Beatles (What is the Fab Four? Can you name any Beatles song?) to disappointing results:

I get that if teens only listen to a certain genre of music, they aren’t going to go far outside that genre. But C’MON!

Lets Get Physical

As wonderful as it is to freeze to death and have to shovel your way out of feet of snow and ice (sarcasm overload), I must say that I am mighty glad that the seasons have changed and that gradually the temperature is rising.

I know that I’ve been counting down the days until it’s warmth enough to go jogging outside and enjoy the fresh warmer weather. For me, few things can rival the feeling of stretching out and going for a long run in the park. And of course, my favorite part of jogging is creating the perfect running mix to blast and daydream to as I exercise!

A truly effective running playlist needs to include a mix of high-energy music (that you can run in-beat with) that mesh a plethora of genres together to keep your running experience varied and exciting! So last night, in preparation for the weekend, I put together my personal “2011 Springtime Outdoor Extravaganza Jogging Mania” Playlist!:

1. Kings and Queens” – 30 Seconds to Mars
2. We Are Golden” – Mika
3. Do It” – Nelly Furtado
4. Holiday” – The Get Up Kids
5. Backstabber” – Ke$ha
6. Go Your Own Way” – Fleetwood Mac
7. Sweetness” – Jimmy Eat World
8. Bionic” – Christina Aguilera
9. Hurricane J” – The Hold Steady
10. Earth Intruders” – Björk
11. Don’t Stop Me Now” – Queen
12. Bug a Boo” – Destiny’s Child
13. Emma Discovery” – The Anniversary
14. Roman’s Revenge” – Nicki Minaj feat. Eminem
15. Better Open the Door” – Motion City Soundtrack

Like it? Give it a play during your next outdoor jaunt! Hate it? Tell me what would be on your playlist!

Bootsy Collins meets Rachel Maddow

No need to go to the eye doctor, you read right!

Last week, Bootsy Collins was at 30 Rock filming an interview with TheGrio.com when a friendly fellow who works with Rachel Maddow came up to me and asked if Bootsy had time to say hi to Rachel.

“”OK, I’ll see.” is what I said when I was really thinking “Of course Bootsy has time to say hi to Rachel!”

The video above is how it went down.

Rachel was an absolute sweetheart about it even though we interrupted her staff meeting. After all, it’s not every day that a legendary funk pioneer drops by your offices.*

*Disclaimer: Does not apply to Shore Fire HQ in Brooklyn.

Here’s a photo of Bootsy giving Rachel tips on how to run the show:

Now, watch a video interview one of the show’s producers filmed with Bootsy for the Maddow blog here!

We got a chance to attend the annual Kristen Ann Carr Fund benefit A Night To Remember over the weekend. It’s an occasion to think of Kristen, who died of sarcoma in her early 20s,  but also to celebrate the progress and success of the Foundation set up in her honor that provides grants for cancer research and seeks to improve all aspects of cancer patient life with an emphasis on adolescents and young adults.

The spouses: Dana Points, Courtney Banfield, Chris Zembower, Peter Shapiro

And here we are with our significant others in a rare night out together:
