Down in the Basement at Big Pink

So, this past weekend I went up to Woodstock and caught a show in the basement at Big Pink.  Let me repeat that:  I HUNG OUT IN THE BASEMENT OF BIG PINK!  There, that’s better.

The occassion was the launch of a new series of intimate concerts being filmed there, and the pilot episode featured Dawes, who were awesome.

I had been to Big Pink once before.  My wife surprised me by taking me there for my birthday about ten years ago.  This was in the pre-GPS days and we made a couple wrong turns before finding the place (it’s on a gravel road, off a backroad etc.etc.).  But once you round the bend of the driveway, there it is, looking pretty much the same as it does in this ca. 1968 photo.

But, seriously, I never thought I would set foot inside the basement!  There are cool/odd artifacts everywhere.  Those piano guts hanging from the ceiling, did they once live inside a piano that Richard Manuel played?  Dawes singer Taylor Goldsmith commented that his band probably wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for that basement.  I’m sure a lot of his peers feel that way too.

Stylish Celebration For Marilyn’s Birthday

Around Shore Fire July 4th is always a special time, and not just because we’re taking the day off for the Declaration of Independence…. Shore Fire President Marilyn Laverty’s birthday is July 3, so we’ve always got two parties going. This year, the soiree was down the street from our Downtown Brooklyn office, at the top notch Italian restaurant Frankie’s Sputino. Our party was in their 19th century stable around back, thankfully air conditioned.  The company was stellar, the food delicious, and the mood festive! Happy Birthday, Marilyn, and cheers to many more.

Do You Believe in Huey?

I grew up on the music of Huey Lewis, so naturally I jumped at the chance to see Huey Lewis and The News play live. And as familiar with him as I am, there were plenty of surprises. Here are a few things I learned:

1. Huey Lewis is a mean harmonica player.

Hard to tell in this action shot (ok, blurry shot), but trust me, he is WAILING. He told me and my fellow Shore Fireite Brendan backstage that being invited to play harmonica on a Rockpile track started the chain of events that lead to his record deal. Woah!

2. The News take an a capella break at every show.

With Huey on lead, the band surprised the audience and became a true barber shop quartet. Looking sharp and sounding FANTASTIC.

3. Everybody loves Huey

Not only did one politically-minded fan shout out “Huey for President” (which Huey humbly declined) but some hard partying bros danced up a storm in the back while the ladies swooned as Huey passed through the aisles.

4. Love is still a very powerful thing.

As Huey said, in so many words, they had no idea that when they wrote this song, they’d be playing it every night for the rest of their lives. Here’s to the “Power of Love!”

Takin' Kids On a Road Trip: My Wife Talks It on The Today Show

Just in cased you missed my wife Dana Points on the Today Show earlier this week, in her capacity as Editor-in-Chief of Parents Magazine. Here’s the clip. She’s on talking about taking kids on a long car ride. Doesn’t she look great (sounds great too)?

Celeb Sighting Across the Street!

As us Shore Fire folks strolled on into work yesterday morning, we had to make our way around a swarm of people who had gathered in front of the Brooklyn Courthouse. Turns out that modern day R&B icons John Legend, Melanie Fiona, Common and The Roots were filming a music video right across the street from the Shore Fire offices!

Unluckily for them (and those hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars), it started raining cats & dogs in the late morning and sent everyone running for cover.

Check out the action from our 16th floor view:

Can you spot the stars?!

Ain't No Party Like a P-Funk Party

The Mothership landed in central Brooklyn last night – George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic played free at Wingate Field courtesy of the amazing Martin Luther King Jr. concert series hosted by Friend of Shore Fire Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. Controlled anarchy – 20 people on the stage, 10,000 people on the field, me dancing with a goofy smile on my face in the 3rd row. It funked and rocked so hard! A great tribute to P-Funk’s late music director Garry Shider. Funk In Peace, Starchild. And yes, I brought my flashlight. Ohio Players opened – a great choice, especially when they closed with [Shore]“Fire.”

Here’s a P-Funk clip from 1978:
