Our first summer Shore Fire family outing was last night at Manhattan’s trendy new table tennis hot spot SPiN. With a couple of tables to ourselves and a plethora of bright orange ping pong balls, some serious (and some not so serious) competition ensued!
Mark Satlof (right) works up a sweat against formidable competitor Matt Hanks. Meanwhile, at the other table, I participated in a disastrous doubles game that began with a real intention to play by the rules and dissolved into a free-for-all with balls flying in faces and no idea who was winning (but plenty of self-congratulating anyway).
If drinks, smack-talk, and a healthy, if unskilled, spirit of competition weren’t enough, we had the opportunity to get schooled by legendary table tennis champion, Marty Reisman.
After posing with similarly plaid-clad dudes Andy Silva (center) and Nick Loss-Eaton (right), Marty gave us some tips on our serving technique:
With professional instruction like this, perhaps a future champion will emerge from among us? If only we had the time to train!
Alejandro Escovedo has had a busy week!
First, he taped a killer set with his band The Sensitive Boys for SIRIUS XM. It’ll air Sunday, June 27 on the Loft Channel with Dave Marsh. It was a blistering electric set and highlights were new single “Anchor,” “Undesired” (my favorite of the night), and “Down in the Bowery.” David Pulkingham played some incredible guitar while Jenni Muldaur and Serena Jean joined the band to sing backup.
Here’s Alejandro with Chris Taillie and me. I’m the bearded one. Just kidding. L-R: Chris Taillie, Alejandro, me.
Alejandro performed at the Summerstage Gala, a tribute to Simon & Garfunkel with both in attendance! Here’s Alejandro backstage talking to Loudon Wainwright III. Loudon and daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche sang incredibly together.
It was a magical night! Here’s Alejandro with Willie Nile singing a show-closing rendition of “The Boxer” that brought them a standing ovation:
Also spotted backstage were Joan Osborne, Cory Chisel, Brendan Benson, Jill Sobule, Livingston Taylor, Ben Gibbard, St. Vincent, Larry Campbell, Jorma Kaukonen, and Mayor Bloomberg.

Disney just launched a new way to buy movie tickets online. So far it’s just for their upcoming release Toy Story 3 but they’re planning on piloting it for this hit and then rolling out more movies to it.

Basically Disney Tickets Together is just an application that lets you buy tickets to the movie directly on Facebook, and then asks who you’d like to invite friends right at the point of purchase so that buying tickets instantly becomes a social activity.
Really Disney? You’ve socialized internet shopping. Now we can still do it from your underwear, during our favorite TV shows, and still skip all of the traffic/crowds/lines…but now we can do it with friends who are also in the comfort of their undergarments and Lazyboys. Just imagine! It could be a virtual shopping trip between you and your best friend, at any time of the day you want! Maybe even fire up the Skype video chat so you can talk and see each other’s reactions to various items?
Okay, okay…maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here.
But something just as simple as movie tickets through Facebook would be concert tickets through Facebook. Why not? Most of us would probably agree that concerts are a much more social environment than watching a movie and going to a concert by yourself is just as lame as going to the movies by yourself. It’s a perfect fit for social online shopping, so I hope you promoters are taking interest.
You can read more about Disney’s Facebook application in the New York Times, and you can try it out on Facebook here.
And thanks to Chris Taillie for the inter office tip!
