Happy Birthday, Chris!

A couple weeks ago we celebrated the birthday of the ever-cheerful and impeccably bearded Chris Taillie.

Nice job with those candles, Chris! Little does he know that in approximately 5 minutes, that fabulous cake, from Cobble Hill’s own One Girl Cookies, will have completely disappeared.

Though we managed to miss out on the traditional blowing-out-the-candles pic, we did end up with this gem in which Nick Loss-Eaton appears to be air-drumming and Chris is biting his lip in birthday cake anticipation while Mark Satlof prepares to catch it all on film (click to enlarge):

Or maybe this is Chris’ rabbit impression? That was a carrot cake after all!

Welcome To The New New Suite 16

In the summer of 2006 the idea of a company having its own blog was still the kind of thing that might get you a funny look.

Internet time sure does seem to move awfully fast, but at the time the Huffington Post had only just been founded, in 2005, and Twitter wouldn’t be incorporated as a company until April of the following year, 2007.

But we were fans of blogs, which at the time were quietly but rapidly changing from a great place to find out about music for geeks (like us) to being considered another of the many channels that comprise “The Media.”

So we created this, The Suite 16, using only a brilliant play on words (check our office address), some software from blogger.com, and a dream.

Four years and a couple hundred posts later, and now everyone’s grandmother has a blog, dogs and even cats have blogs, and most of us have some kind of mobile device in our jacket pocket that lets us read them on the train or at the beach.

And since four years is the classic time to schedule a graduation, here’s ours — a brand shiny new Wordpress blog with cool little boxes and all sorts of other stuff. Check it out, we hope you like it too. Welcome to the new new thing here at Shore Fire Media.

Raw Power: Shake Appeal Blows Speakers

You ever listen to “Shake Appeal” at top volume, you know, turned all the way up to ten? I been thinking about “Shake Appeal” after getting Sony Legacy’s lovingly put together Raw Power ultra super deluxe edition.  There was chatter years back about “Shake Appeal,” with its massive low end and freight-train stomp (talk about raw power) blowing the fuses on speakers across the country. It might have been written in the Village Voice, or maybe Cream, I can’t recall. But I can attest, I remember it like yesterday, it actually happened to me. In my college dorm room, I put the vinyl on.  I just had to spin the volume knob to its stop on “Shake Appeal,” and, pop, there went the fuse.

World Cup 2010 South Africa: USA vs England, June 12th

As the resident authority on football (soccer) at Shore Fire Media, I feel compelled to write a preview of the first USA match at this year’s World Cup being held in South Africa.

On June 12 USA faces off against England. Here is some background and interesting factiods that will hopefully wet your appetite for this grudge match:

• This is the first time the two countries have played each other in the World Cup since 1950 when we stunned England, and the world, with a 1-0 win. That was our best World Cup showing since the first World Cup in 1930. We wouldn’t qualify for the World Cup again until four decades later.

• US star Landon Donovan, who plays for MLS team LA Galaxy, was on loan this winter to the English Premiership club, Everton FC. During one match Donovan tackled the left back for Chelsea FC, Ashley Cole, and broke his ankle in the process. Cole is also the left back for the English national team. His prospects to participate in the World Cup were very much in question until recently, leading some in the press to cry foul. Unfortunately for us, it seems like he will be fit in time for the World Cup.

• International celebrity, bending wizard, and husband of Posh Spice, England’s David Beckham tore his achilles heel while on loan to AC Milan this winter so he will not be Bending it like Beckham in South Africa this summer. This is good news for the USA.

• Arguably the best footballer in the world right now, England’s Wayne Rooney was out with injury but now looks like he will be fit enough to join the England squad in South Africa. This is bad news for the USA.

We are very much the underdog in this match. Everyone on the England squad plays in the top football leagues in the world. While a number of Americans now play in Europe, only a handful play or have played in England’s Premiership or Italy’s Serie A. I don’t think England will make the mistake of not taking us seriously. However, there are some players on the England who have huge egos. And so much of this game is mental discipline. The stage is set for the re-match from 1950… So… Where will YOU be on June 12th?
